Travelling with a Mobility Scooter: A Practical Checklist
· Philability
Plan around your scooter and your route
Travelling with a mobility scooter can involve transport rules, charging, storage and access checks. Requirements vary by airline, rail operator, coach company, ferry and accommodation, so confirm the details for your exact journey before you book.
Start with the Wheelchair Travel Guide, then use this checklist for scooter-specific planning.
Record your scooter details
- Make a note of the make, model, dimensions and weight.
- Check whether the tiller folds and whether the battery can be removed.
- Record the battery type, voltage and watt-hour information if provided.
- Photograph the scooter, controls, battery and any removable parts.
- Check whether the scooter can be stored safely at your accommodation.
Ask the transport provider
Give the provider the exact scooter and battery information, not just the word “mobility scooter”. Ask about booking deadlines, loading methods, storage space, terminal assistance, charging and what happens if the route changes. Ask whether the scooter will be kept with you until boarding or collected earlier, and where it will be returned.
Check the destination
- Is there a step-free route from arrival to your accommodation?
- Can the scooter fit through the entrance, lift and room doors?
- Is there a suitable place to store and charge it?
- Are pavements, paths and kerbs likely to affect the route?
- Can local taxis or transfers carry both you and the scooter?
Prepare before leaving
Charge the scooter according to the manufacturer’s instructions and carry the correct charger. Secure removable parts and keep essential information accessible. Do not modify the battery or rely on an unapproved charger for convenience.
Plan for delays or damage
Keep the provider’s contact details and your equipment photographs together. If the scooter is damaged or delayed, report it promptly, take photographs and ask for a written reference. Have a realistic alternative for the next part of the journey if the scooter is temporarily unavailable.
