Wheelchair Airport Checklist

· Philability

Lightweight folding travel wheelchair

Use this checklist before you travel

Airports can involve long distances, queues, transfers and changes of plan. Use this checklist alongside the Wheelchair Travel Guide and confirm the details directly with your airport, airline and booking provider.

Before booking

  • Tell the airline or travel provider what assistance you need and ask when it must be requested.
  • Explain whether you use a manual wheelchair, powered wheelchair or mobility scooter.
  • Check the equipment dimensions, weight, battery type and whether any parts can be removed.
  • Ask how your equipment will be handled, stored and returned at the destination.
  • Check whether your route includes a change of aircraft, terminal or transport provider.

Before leaving home

  • Keep your booking details, assistance confirmation and important contact numbers together.
  • Label removable parts and keep photographs of your wheelchair or scooter and any visible damage.
  • Pack chargers, essential medication, transfer aids and repair items in a bag you can reach.
  • Check your arrival plan, including how you will reach the accommodation after landing.
  • Allow time for check-in, security, boarding and possible waiting for equipment.

Questions to ask the airport or airline

“Is the route accessible?” is often too broad to be useful. Ask about the specific parts that affect you:

  • Where should you arrive and check in if you need assistance?
  • Can you remain in your own wheelchair until the boarding point, where applicable?
  • What transfer equipment is used, and can you explain any transfer needs in advance?
  • Where will a manual wheelchair or mobility scooter be collected after arrival?
  • What happens if your equipment is delayed or arrives damaged?
  • Are there accessible toilets and a quiet place to wait?

At the airport

Arrive with enough time to check in without rushing. Keep your assistance request visible and explain your preferred transfer method clearly. Before handing over equipment, remove loose items, secure anything that folds and take a final photograph. If something changes, ask for the name or reference number of the person handling the issue.

Pack useful travel aids

The right equipment depends on your journey. Browse the Accessible Travel collection for travel and mobility aids, but check dimensions, stated limits, battery requirements and intended use before ordering or packing anything.

After landing

Check your wheelchair or scooter before leaving the collection point. If you notice damage or missing parts, report it promptly and keep photographs and written details. Confirm how you will get to your accommodation and whether the planned vehicle can take your equipment.
