How to Choose a Raised Toilet Seat: UK Buying Guide

· Philip Grant

Raised toilet seat with armrests

Why Use a Raised Toilet Seat?

Getting on and off a standard toilet can be difficult or painful for people with limited mobility, hip or knee problems, or those recovering from surgery. A raised toilet seat reduces the distance you need to lower yourself, making the process safer and more comfortable.

How Much Height Do You Need?

Raised toilet seats typically add between 5cm and 15cm of height. The right amount depends on your height, leg length, and how much difficulty you have bending your knees or hips. As a general guide:

  • 5–7cm raise — mild difficulty, post-operative recovery
  • 10cm raise — moderate mobility difficulty, hip replacement recovery
  • 15cm raise — significant mobility difficulty, tall users

When seated, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at roughly 90 degrees.

With or Without Arms?

Without arms: More compact, easier to transfer sideways, lower cost. Suitable if you have reasonable upper body strength.

With arms: Provides push-up support when standing, much safer for people with weak legs or poor balance. Strongly recommended for most users.

Fixed vs Hinged Lid

Some raised toilet seats include a soft-close hinged lid, which is more hygienic and easier to clean. If multiple people use the same toilet, a hinged lid model is worth the extra cost.

Fitting and Compatibility

Most raised toilet seats fit standard UK toilet pans using a clamp or locking mechanism. Check whether your toilet is a standard D-shape or a more unusual shape before buying. Some seats are adjustable to fit both.

Weight Capacity

Standard raised toilet seats support up to 130–150kg. Bariatric models are available up to 250kg+ — always check the rating if needed.
