Electric Wheelchair Buying Guide: What to Know Before You Buy (UK)

Why Choose an Electric Wheelchair?
An electric wheelchair (also called a powerchair) is powered by a rechargeable battery and controlled by a joystick or alternative controller. It's the right choice when self-propelling a manual wheelchair is no longer practical — due to upper body weakness, fatigue, or conditions like MS, stroke, or motor neurone disease.
Key Things to Consider
Range Per Charge
Most electric wheelchairs offer between 15km and 40km per charge. Think honestly about how far you travel in a typical day. If you're mainly using it indoors or for short trips, 15–20km is usually sufficient. For regular outdoor use, aim for 25km+.
Weight and Portability
Standard electric wheelchairs can weigh 60–120kg — too heavy to lift into a car without a hoist. If you need to transport it regularly, look for a folding electric wheelchair (typically 25–35kg) that can be broken down and loaded into a boot.
Indoor vs Outdoor Use
Indoor chairs have a tighter turning circle and smaller footprint. Outdoor chairs have larger wheels, better ground clearance, and more robust suspension. Some models handle both well — check the turning radius and wheel size.
Joystick and Controls
Most chairs use a standard right-hand joystick. If you have limited hand function, look for chairs with left-hand joystick options, chin controls, or head array controls. Check what's available before committing.
Seat Width and Weight Capacity
Measure your hip width and add 2–5cm for comfort. Standard seats are 40–50cm wide. Bariatric models are available for users up to 200kg+.
Speed
UK electric wheelchairs are typically limited to 6km/h (4mph) for pavement use. Some outdoor models go faster — check local regulations if you plan to use it on public roads.
Folding Electric Wheelchairs
If portability matters, a folding electric wheelchair is worth the premium. Look for:
- Total weight under 30kg (ideally under 25kg)
- One-button or tool-free folding
- Battery that can be removed for airline travel
- Solid tyres (no punctures)
What About Carbon Fibre?
Carbon fibre electric wheelchairs are significantly lighter than aluminium equivalents — some weigh as little as 15kg. They're more expensive but genuinely easier to transport and handle.
Tax and VAT
